Default Why is it so confusing?

I never thought that it would be this difficult to upgrade your computer. Perhaps its because I dont have much knowledge about computers...Well anyways, I have around $400 to spend, nothing more. I wanted to get some parts for my pc so it can at least be able to play some sort of game!..Yeah it's truly that terrible, here let me show you which motherboard I have

HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Motherboard Specifications, 945GCT-HM (Livermore)

Yes it's crap, I know that much. But yeah, I plan on buying a BFG Geforce 8800 GT OC for $200 (not sure if thats a good deal or not...) ...and some RAM since im stuck with only 512mb right now. Would getting 2GB be sufficient for the video card? Also I plan on buying a new psu, are any recommended? Btw I cant use Newegg, unfortunately they dont ship to Canada..

And yeah...do I also have to buy a new motherboard and CPU? I really hope not. If its really required, which ones? Please, nothing too expensive though.
x_x

Any help is appreciated!

Oooh btw i plan on playing games like Aion...simcity societies...and some others similar to those. I dont intend on playing games such as Crysis and what not.

Here's a couple of things from NCIX.

NCIX.com - Buy EVGA E-GEFORCE 9600GT Superclocked 675MHZ 512MB 1.8GHZ DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDTV Out Video Card - 512-P3-N862-AR In Canada. $189.99, $25 MIR

NCIX.com - Buy OCZ StealthXStream OCZ500SXS 500W ATX12V 20/24PIN Active PFC ATX Power Supply 120MM Fan Black - OCZ500SXS In Canada. $61.99, $15 MIR

I don't know what CPU you have, as the motherboard specs don't include that info. The specs do say that it can run a E4xxx Conroe core, so you could go with any of these:

NCIX.com - Buy Intel Core 2 Duo E4500 Dual Core Processor LGA775 Conroe 2.2GHZ 800FSB 2MB Retail - BX80557E4500 In Canada.

NCIX.com - Buy Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 Dual Core Processor LGA775 Conroe 2.4GHZ 800FSB 2MB Retail - BX80557E4600 In Canada.

NCIX.com - Buy Intel Core 2 Duo E4700 Dual Core Processor LGA775 Conroe 2.6GHZ 800FSB 2MB Retail - BX80557E4700 In Canada.

I don't know if it can run the E6xxx Conroes, or any of the other C2D cores. You would have to contact HP to find out for sure.

Oh I have an Intel Celeron D 360 with 3.45GHz and 512KB L2 cache, would it need to be changed? Thanks for replying =)

It wouldn't have to change, but a Core2Duo woold make a huge difference. Think bicycle to motorcycle.

Counting a CPU, you're looking at $400+. Toss in a little more and you could just build a whole new rig.

they make it confusing on purpose so we as consumers mess up a lot and sometimes end up having to buy the "correct" part...and often being stuck with something we don't want to return because of some restocking fee

Oh really, how much are we looking at to build a new rig? I thought that with all the other components, it'd be quite a bit. But if so, would it be more wise to build from scratch and waste some more money or just upgrade with those pieces?

I really don't want to waste 400+ for something mediocre. I've done this way too many times and don't really want to once again..

Newegg.com - COOLER MASTER Centurion 534 RC-534-KKN2-GP Black Aluminum & Mesh bezel / SECC Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases

Newegg.com - FSP Group AX500-PN ATX2.2 500W Power Supply 110-120/ 220-240V UL, CSA, VDE, NEMKO, TUV, CE, CB, FCC - Power Supplies

Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Duo E7200 Wolfdale 2.53GHz 3MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - CPUs / Processors

Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3R LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Dynamic Energy Saver Ultra Durable II Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards

Newegg.com - Crucial Ballistix Tracer 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

Newegg.com - Seagate ST303204N1A1AS-RK 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Internal Hard Drives

Newegg.com - EVGA 384-P3-N966-TR GeForce 9600 GSO 384MB 192-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

$630 - $60 mail-in rebates = $570 + shipping and OS

That would give you a screaming mid-range machine. No it's not a quad, but I doubt you need one. The 9600GT is an awesome card for the price. This rig would be solid and romp any pre-built you could buy.

*EDIT* Forgot you are in Canada, but the prices would be close, seeing as how the dollar has taken a pounding. */EDIT*
