Hi. I've been researching like crazy trying to fidn the cheapest, yet most performance mobo for my needs and finacial situation. I've heard good things about MSI, DFI, and A-bit. DFI is too expensive, and MSI seems best for me. I'm looking for performance in my home music studio, and gaming. I got GeForece 6600 256MB for graphics, but want a mobo/cpu combo thats good. I've been looking at the following...
MSI PC3400

MSI K8T NEO V

A Bit KU8

Also, i can't seem to find PC3400 DDR RAM... Only 3200 and 3500... One more thing. Whats the difference b/w PC3200 and PC3400 speed and performance wise?
Thanks,
Kyle

I'd have to say the MSI K8T. Its a good peice of equipment. And while im talking, if your going gaming, you should look into a 6600GT instead of just the 6600

In most benchmarks, the 6600's with 256mb of ram actually showed a slightly slower performance. Unless you already have the card, then I'm wasting time...

PC 3200 is the standard for RAM right now. You're kinda confused with the ram thing. Your MSI motherboard you have there is a motherboard with the AMD Athlon 3400+ processor. I don't think I'd buy from them. That's not a very good deal anyhow. Socket 754 is out of production. The FSB is only 400... The ram runs in a single channel. Looks like your budget might need to be a socket 754 setup though.

Try shopping at www.newegg.com. Here's a few parts for you.
MSI Mobo s754 with your AGP slot:

Here's a processor
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ s754 Newcastle Core

Good luck, and post back if you have a higher budget.

Cool. I'm on a budget of about $250 + shipping for JUST a motherboard/CPU combo. Those were just a few examples. I'd like to get as fast as possible, most performance, whatever. I may even bump that up to $300. The 6600 card I have can be converted to GT, and it comes OC'ed stock, and can be OC'ed even more... I like how it has to be connected to the PSU molex connection directly... Never seen that before! No worries there... If you guys can help me find the best and fastest mobo with CPU combo for $300, I'd be grateful! I don't know too much about this stuff yet. Learning though! I seen AMD Athlon64's with 800 FSB and I want that! The faster this thing processes and the smoother it looks, the better... I need processing power for music, mainly... My 1.533Ghz AMD PC1800 is pretty quick right now... I wanna upgrade to atleast 2.4Ghz, 800 FSB, PC3200 or higher, socket 939 at least... I didn't see the 754 on those boards! Woops! Thanks,
Kyle

Ooh, like the processor, but heard monster bad things about gigabyte boards... Any other boards around that price range?

Alrighty, here's what I'm going with. Thanks for the help! These are exact links to websites I'll buy them from.
MSI mobo... http://www.atacom.com/program/print...RCH_ALL&Item_code=MBA9_MICS_EO_2F&USER_ID=www

AMD64
http://www.linemicro.com/product.php?id=13270

Now, the AMD64 says 1.6Ghz FSB, and 512Kb Cache, but the mobo is 800 FSB and 1MB cache... I can't seem to find the best deal on matching devices. Anywhere I can get a 1.6Ghz FSB mathcing mobo, or 1MB cahce matching processor? I'd rather go with the higher FSB then the little extra L2 cache...

you're going backwards! Quit trying to deal shop... for your own good. If you don't like gigabyte, go with MSI, like you did. you reverted back to the Neo2-F motherboard...

Go with newegg. They offer great prices and GOOD EQUIPMENT.

The site you're buying your processor from is not reputable and the parts are backwards. You'll be saving 10 bucks MAYBE, and be getting second rate equipment.
AMD Athlon 64 3700+:

Asus A8V s939 mobo:

Stick with the stuff I've pointed to you. The motherboard you picked out has only 800mhz HT

You're right, I like that combo... I'm just trying to learn. :) Hey, do you happen to know of any methods for figuring out what kind of board I have. From the looks of that Asus, the board I have now is Asus, but there are absolutely NO markings. I'm basing judgement on physical similarities! They look REALLY familiar! I got AMD PC1800, 1.533Ghz, 266 FSB now, and the thing is FAST! I can't imagine 3700+ with the right ram. Is legacy a good RAM company? A friend of mien sold me a stick of PC2400 or whatever Legacy 512MB DDR RAM for $30, and said it cost of $100 back in the day, like 2 years ago. Just wanted to know... Thanks,
Kyle

legacy... not anything special, but as far as valueram goes, it really doesn't matter as long as it works.

To learn about all the specs of your computer, download a program called Everest Home Edition. It'll tell you pretty much anything about your PC that you need to know.
