how much ram is too much ram though? i hear that over 3 gigs i will actually decreas performece? i was thinking of 2 gigs... 2x 1 gig duel channel ram..(4x512)

Anything over two gigs is overkill, IMHO. (note: this only applies to Windows. The 2.4 kernel (with PAE) and the 2.6 kernel in Linux can and will handle much more RAM without a significant drop in performance.)

2x1GB should do fine.
