what do you think of this build? general multi task PC

thanks for previous help on a build...a friend of mine is now interested in a build and this is what we came up with. he'll be primarily wanting to multi task, play music, store a lot of photo and video and play a few computer games (not a serious gamer tho). he'll also want to do some video editing in the future, simple stuff with his home camcorder and store that video on the machine, etc. really we want to build a solid good value machine that will be good for the next 3-5 years as a mid-range PC.

budget is sub 1k without monitor, keyb, and mouse. he will need a new OS tho, thinking vista for now, then win7 upon release.

any suggestions are appreciated! thanks!

also, does he need a cpu heatsink? he will not be overclocking.

The E8400 will come with a heatsink, and provided the case has at least average cooling. Other than that, that build looks pretty much perfect.
I can't say much about prices though, since I work in £s.

Only thing I could suggest is a bit more RAM, video editing tends to need quite a bit, but that probably won't be necessary.

You could grab a better video card for the money...

Also, that PSU is a tad overpriced. a good 500w could set you back 50 bucks before a 20 dollar MIR, or the same brand has a 610w for 90 bucks with a 30 dollar MIR.

someone once told me to combo intel/nvidia rather than intel/radeon but i might be way off there.

that price is a actually for two 1tb samsung drives...

i chose that PS cuz of the 6x sata hookups and cuz of the brand.. but you're right, its expensive in comparison...

Actually it would better to go intel/ati because Intel boards support Crossfire. With an Nvida card you wouldn't be able to Crossfire later on. But it doesn't really matter since this isn't a gamer build.

It would be worth going for 8Gb of ram if you're really into HD rendering, AutoCAD or 3D work then it might be of benefit.

That PSU you picked out is fine. But it is a lot cheaper from here:

Dunno about the RAM, like I said it probably wouldn't be worth it. Probably better just to go with 4GB for now, and if any more is needed in the future then you can buy it then.
