Default Upgrading the Processor

Can someone provide me a link on how to upgrade a processor? I don't want to upgrade right now I have an Athlon x2 but I see that my motherboard supports Phenom II and X4 processors.

I'm just seeing if I can upgrade the processor myself in the future, because I would hate to have to buy another computer next year.

I read that you have to update the BIOS, but if I download a BIOS update from the manufacturer how will that help? Is there some link between the Operating System and the BIOS? I guess I'm mostly confused on the BIOS step.

Default Re: Upgrading the Processor

The BIOS is the thing in your motherboard which organises all the basic functions of the hardware (simplification); even if you find out you can't upgrade, it's generally best to have the latest BIOS version for your motherboard. Sometimes BIOS updates are required for the motherboard to properly utilise a newer processor.

What model is your motherboard?

Laptop i7-3740QM @ 2.7GHz, 2x4GB 1600Mhz, GT640M, OCZ Agility 3 120GB
Smartphone HTC One M8 - Sense 7 - 6.0
