You can get an X2 3600, a cheap mobo, 1GB of DDR2-677 ram and a cheap case and PSU for somewhere around like 230 bucks...then you can add a 7600GT or something for another hundred if you want to game.

Yes don't try to save a dieing breed. Upgrade to dual-core and a new mobo and stuff.
