Default upgrading my PC

OK. I have an HP Pavilion a1540n Windows machine, and i'm thinking of upgrading it.

However, I don't really know how to go about that. I have average knowledge about computers, which means I know about next to nothing about how I should upgrade.

I'm thinking of upgrading gradually, slowly saving up money until I have enough money for one thing and then repeating the process.

I want to upgrade my processor first

Anyone have any idea how I should go about that?

if you need specs, just ask.

Also, I am hoping for it to turn into a high end gaming PC (i'm a gamer, and I like games with pretty graphics)

Well. First you will have to tell us what type of motherboard you have. I.E. How many sockets would help a lot. . From there people can get a general idea of what parts will work with the computer, and which ones won't.

not that I can remember, but I might be mistaken. I have so many manuals lying around that it's easy to get mixed up.
