I'm trying to upgrade the memory in a laptop for a customer--Gateway 3520gz. I add the 512 stick and it won't boot into Windows XP and it hangs up. I take the stick out, it boots fine.

I've learned this much:

- no Cas latency issues with the memory and the onboard stuff.
- no issues withanything else.
-I can not update BIOS. No such updates available.
-Everything else works very well. No issues anywhere else.
-I really don't think this is a bad stick of memory. I had another and couldn't get any images to come up at all.

Any suggestions to what may be the issue here or what I can do to make this work?

What are the specs of the memory, and the max specs supported by the laptop?

Did you make sure the memory is getting enough voltage?

Are you trying to run two different types of ram at once? That could be the issue. Especially if they are rated at different speeds or timings.

The specs from Gateway are:

# 512 MB (PC2700) DDR SODIMM (256 MB internal memory and 256 MB SODIMM)
# Expandable to 1256 MB

I'm installing one DDR 512 MB/PC2700 w/ a cas latency of 2.5. Everything I have read on this unit tells me I have the right stuff.

I've got a feeling I'll have to tear this thing apart and rip out the old memory and replace it with my stuff.
