Is an upgrade worth it, or should I wait?

no. if you have the cash, upwards of 600-800 dollars you should spend it on an intel system.
if you dont have that much, AMD can be your best bet. although, intel makes some pretty good budget cpus. i wpuldn't buy one if it wasnt a core 2 duo or a q6600 quad though (ie not an allendale, although that is really only my personal preferrence).
if you cant affors that, i would suggest buying an AMD.

Hm...okay. So AMD as a last resort. But since there are only two resorts, that's not bad :p.

Any advice on whether or not I should overclock?

That all depends on you, and the hardware you get. If you get an AMD x2 5000 black edition, it is very easy to overclock it too the 6000's speed, and you save some cash. It doesn't come with a heatsink but you're much better off with one of those gargantuan Zalman Heatsinks. You can build a system these days for Almost any amount of cash, and it wont be slow.
