Upgrade or new build?

Hello all,

Recently, the requirements for Warhammer Total War have been released.
PC Recommended Specifications:processor: Intel® Core™ i5-4570 3.20GHz
RAM: 8 GB
Hard Drive: 35 GB
Video Card: (DirectX 11) AMD Radeon R9 270X 2048MB | NVIDIA GeForce GTX

PC 60fps+ Specifications:
Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-4790K 4.0 GHz
RAM: 8 GB
Hard Drive: 35 GB
Video Card: (DirectX 11) AMD Fury X or Nvidia GTX 980 @1080P

I would like to be closer to the 2nd specifications, or somewhere in between. Currently I have 8gb of 1333 mhz ram, an i5-3450 3.1ghz and a GTX 780.

I'm way out of the loop now. I see there is sandybridge, ivybridge, skylake etc, and I have no idea what the best bang for the buck is or if the new technology is worth it. Obviously my board is LGA 1155, so it would be nice if i didnt have to buy a new board. With that being said, if the upgrade is worth it to change sockets, I am more than willing to change boards. I'm not sure how much of a bottle neck my ram is either. My budget for if I had to get a new motherboard, cpu, and ram would be $600-700. Obviously the cheaper, the better. May be willing to spend slightly more if the upgrade would be significant.

Thanks for any and all help.

Thanks for the input. I didn't realize my card was the weak link. Paid close to $500 for it like a year and a half ago. I actually have 2 SSDs already though, so I think I've got that covered.

To be honest I think I'm going to stick with the card. I dont think I can stomach dropping over a grand on one piece to my computer in less than two years.

With that in mind, do you guys have any suggestions as to my original question at hand?

Thanks again

Your card isn't a "weak link", as such, just the weakest in a chain of quite strong links.

To answer the question, I'd either upgrade your GPU or leave it another year.

Yea, question was already answered. The 780 isn't a bad card and the biggest difference you'll see is only with a better GPU. Doesn't mean you need to get a 980ti, but since you don't have your location it's hard to suggest GPUs. 600-700 will easily buy you a 980 or 980ti here in the states and although the 780 is definitely on the higher end of doing well cards it is starting to show it's age these days. I think just wait for the new Pascal cards at the end of the summer. It'll be more worth the money in the end compared to current Maxwell cards.

Okay, so new question. My buddy wants to upgrade his PC to meet the same requirements above. He has $700 to play with also, but he has an older AMD quad core and slower ram that I think definitely calls for an upgrade.

So he needs a CPU, motherboard, ram, a power supply, and probably a case. He has a 280X video card this is rather snug in his current case. His PSU is 550 watts, I assume he should probably upgrade, any thoughts on what wattage he needs?

A build list would be much appreciated. He is willing to spend slightly over $700 if need be.

Thanks and best regards.

Edit: I put together a build list. Someone approve or disapprove? haha

His current build specs are basically irrelevant. He needs to upgrade, he can barely play current generation total war games.

He has a 280X and 550 watt PSU. I'm assuming with this new build he will need a new PSU?

Other than the case does that build list look alright?
