Up Grade help for older Desk Top

I would like to upgrade my 12 year olds computer. It is an original Compaq 5360 Presario. It is in a mini tower. I would like to upgade the CPU and Mobo, as well as memory. The unit is used mainley for Instant Messaging, and some online gaming sites. Please give some advice that would keep the upgrade around $300.00-$400.00. Your time and advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

you could build a computer for 400 bucks, scrap that computer, no offense but its not worth it. if u want one of us can help put a super cheap pc together for you. im sure you can also buy a comp (maybe not because of how new you are) from the buy/sell threads. in a lil bit ill put one together for you on newegg.com

ya, keep the monitor and the other peripherals, and just buy a new comp altogether. for instant messaging comp $400 is enough. give us a bit more detail on your current computer and we could tell you what you could scavange from it.

Thanks for the quick re-ply! I have a mid tower with a 300 watt ps that I can use. I also have floppy and cd drives. I'm using a wireless card for internet that I would rob from the old unit.The info then I think I need would be the Mobo,cpu,video card, and sound card. Again I appreciate your help. Thanks PPIK

i hope the powersupply you have is good enough. but there's nothing power hungry here, so until you add a video card (which you won't need to unless your 12yr old decides to play Doom3 or something..), the 300watt should suffice. you can stick in your optical and floppy drives in there. and you also have to add taxes and shipping which i didn't.. so you'll go a bit over $400.

if you have to buy anything else, then you'll have to downgrade to socket 754 to stay within budget...

add an os/ for about 100 bucks and its mid 400's but for a new computer you cant beat that, if u were going to upgrade a 12 yr old presario you would probably just buy new mobo/cpu/vid card but you would have to find all the parts used from someone. hope that helps, good luck with whatever you do, (worst case scenario buy a cheap dell desktop, it will run circles around that 450mhz cpu in the compaq)

That mobo is 9.6" x 9.6" make sure it will fit in your case...
