Sound Card vs on board chip

onboard sounds is fine... not familiar with sounds cards, let alone old sound cards, but on board sound has made a lot of progress in the last few years and it does the job just fine!
 
looks like they both use Creative's CA20K2 audio processor. but depending on what other components are used, they may sound different. test both out and "hear" it yourself.
 
The onboard should sound fine unless you want really good sounds in which case you should just get a new sound card.
 
For gaming , I would say go for onboard sound.

If you want it for listening to music, then that can be a different story.

There are some pretty nice sound cards now days, but they cost a pretty nice little chunk of change also....but worth it IMO if you team them up with a good set of cans or speakers.

Remember for good sound, you need a good source, good media and good speakers or headphones....then it is very worth it, but pretty costly also.
