Question Software conflict

I am a novice to a lot of the folks here, but a question for the more tech. advanced. I recentlhy purchased a Gateway notebook. My needs are limited to homework and watching movies and Internet. I changed my software to Yahoo for my home browser. My account is with Yahoo and it is on my desktop. When I installed the yahoo software I noticed that I was no longer getting sound thru the Microsoft Media that came loaded on the laptop new. I tried updating it and it didn't fix the problem. Is this a common problem and is there a solution for it?

never heard of something like that. if you open a sound file in media player and get an error message then its probably the software that has screwed up. if not maybe you accidentally turned the volume down on the dial
