Are socket AM2 processors compatible with DDR3 memory?

Thinking about buying the ASUS M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 AM3 to have room for future upgrades, but I currently cannot afford an AM3 processor, will an AM2 processor work with DDR3?
My Processor=AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+

That processor cannot use ddr3 memory whether or not it can with restricted use I don't know.
