Default Seem like a good buy?

Newegg.com - Gateway DX4720-03 Pentium dual-core E5200(2.50GHz) 4GB DDR2 640GB NVIDIA GeForce 7100 Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit - Desktop PCs

My uncle just called me and asked about getting a new computer, he mentioned the Dell Inspiron 530 from Walmart. I told him I'd look at it and see what I think.

He wants a new one mostly to check email and surf the web, as well as his 11 year old son (my lil cuz) would like to play some games on it.

I looked on Newegg to compare and I found the one above which I linked.

Does that seem like a good deal for the price?

Do you think that the NVIDIA GeForce 7100 (Integrated video) would be able to handle such games like, COD4 (on low settings) and WoW? I'm not completely sure what games he plays so these are just examples.

Thanks a bunch!

I doubt the 7100 would handle much of anything...

You could put together a nice AMD build with, at the very least, better integrated graphics for that cost.

Hmm

I did a bit more snooping around Newegg and came across this guy.

Newegg.com - iBUYPOWER Gamer Power 903 Core 2 Quad Q8200(2.33GHz) 4GB DDR2 320GB NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit - Desktop PCs

What do you guys think about this... price vs performance?

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!
Newegg.com - G.SKILL PI Black 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory
Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Internal Hard Drives
Newegg.com - CORSAIR CMPSU-400CX 400W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply - Power Supplies
Newegg.com - NZXT Apollo Black SECC Steel Chassis ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases

$432.95, all free shipping. 40 bucks in MIRs. You can put that 100 bucks you save on a good video card, although the onboard will be on par/better than that 8400GS in that other build.

And the Q8xxx series was a big fat bundle of fail. The PII X3 720 will be better in games with the higher clocks, and it's so much easier to OC.

Yeah, except he's not in the UK, doesn't need a crappy Q8xxx series processor, and doesn't need to be spending over 600 bucks USD (since 425 GBP is not equal to 425 USD...) on a crappy machine. The machine I priced him out would work better with the newer PII X3 720, since it OCs like a beast.

Alright, I've decided to put together a list of parts and I'm going to see if I can keep this thing as close to $500 as possible.

Dvd Burner: Newegg.com - LG Black 22X (CAV) DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 16X DVD+R DL 22X (CAV) DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache SATA 22X DVDĪR DVD Burner - CD / DVD Burners
Case: Newegg.com - Rosewill R6426-P BK ATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Computer Cases
HDD: Newegg.com - Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD3200AAKS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Internal Hard Drives
Video Card: Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100225L Radeon HD 3870 512MB 256-bit GDDR4 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards
RAM: Newegg.com - G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory
Mobo: Newegg.com - GIGABYTE GA-G31M-ES2L LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards
CPU: Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 Wolfdale 2.8GHz 3MB L2 Cache LGA 775 65W Dual-Core Processor - Processors - Desktops
OS: Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit for System Builders - Operating Systems

I still need to get a Power Supply, and I'm not sure what I would need to run this.

Anything I could do to reduce the price, without sacrificing too much performance?

So far I'm at $512 with shipping.

The build I priced out for you would be loads better. All you'd have to do is add a nice video card. Don't waste your money on the 3870. You could spend maybe 50 bucks more and get something loads better, like this:

Newegg.com - SAPPHIRE 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards

Of course, it's dependent on what kind of games you play, and what resolution you play at.

I put together your build and then added in all the other stuff I'd need (OS, dvd-rom, video card) as well as used a cheaper case and cheaper RAM and it came out to be $598 with shipping.

So far, I was told that my cousin wants to play Swat 4 (really low PC system reqs) but I'm planning for the future a bit, which I assumed the 3870 would be fine.

Thanks for pointing out that hard-drive, that is better and for basically the same price!

Yeah, my build may turn out more expensive, but that's because it has a Phenom II X3 720, which will grossly outperform the E7400.
