Model will be the same, but you won't be able to buy a drive with an exact serial number.... Why do you need it to be that specific SN?

im assuming the drive died and they are looking to salvage parts from the new drive to try to save the old one long enough to get the information off it... next to impossible...

Quite possible actually depending on what actually died. I did a PCB swap with my dad back when my old Maxtor 500GB died. If the head or platters are messed up in the original drive then it wont work.

This. You can usually swap controller cards out if you get the same model of drive.

Trust me, i've spent hours searching for this on tons of websites, obviously including google. The s/n has to be the same though. Thanks

I honestly have no idea why the SN has to be the same. When we brought it to a computer fixer specialist guy (or whatever they're called), he said the model and sn have to the same. was he just talking BS or is there something else we can do???

S/N is the serial number... its unique for EVERY drive, like SSN for people...

Well first you have to give us an idea of what your trying to do in order for us to tell you if there is something else that can be done. But as stated, the S/N will never match. Every drive is made with models but the S/N are unique to that specific one. Just like a VIN number on a car or a SSN for a person. There will never be 2 identical S/N for a part.

So you will never be able to find a unit with the same exact S/N as it already exists in your setup. You can find the model and from there make a decision on what can be done.

Are you just trying to replace the HDD? If so, then you can get any HDD, as long as its the same interface as the current one you have (IDE or SATA). It doesn't have to be the same model.
