Is there a difference in compatibility, or is it just how fast they are?

I have sata ports on my motherboard. Is that all I should worry about is making sure I buy a sata hard drive for those ports, or is there more to watch out for?

My buddy is telling me he thinks only certain boards are compatible with the 3 gig a sec transfer rate. He said if it isn't compatible it'll auto downclock to SATA150. How can I figure this out?

If the Motherboard says it has SATA II or SATA 3.0GB, then it supports SATA II Speeds, if its says SATA 150, then its SATA I .

SATA II Has a Faster Transfer Rate then SATA I However, We haven't even reached the the Capacity of EIDE Transfer Rates Yet, There may Be other differences between the two that I am Not Aware of.
