how would i make this work as a slave drive?

Usually there is some jumper on the back side of the hard disk which allows you to set it to slave mode. But I'm not sure if it's the same on SATA disks.

In the SATA world, there are no masters or slaves (it is very egalitarian). You only need masters and slaves if two drives are on the same motherboard (IDE) header. . . and each SATA drive has its own slot. I believe your bios will control whether you want to make the SATA drive your primary boot disk or not.
