I believe the key wont work on a different copy of XP, but im basing this on a key that I got off a IBM ThinkPad laptop so I could be wrong , but if you have a copy of XP from Microsoft then you have the key provided from Microsoft which will work. As for voiding the warranty thats something you need to find out by reading the warranty information that came with your laptop

Windows Vista Ultimate
Xion Solaris Black/Green Mid ATX Case w/Neon Glow
Intel 975XBX2KR Intel Socket 775 ATX -Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Kingston Dual Channel HyperX 2048MB DDR2 800MHz
Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA Hard Drive
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB PCI-E Dual DVI/HDTV/HDCP Enabled Video Card
Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty PCI Sound Card
Sony DVD Burner and Sony 1.44 MB Floppy Drive
24" Samsung LCD TV/Monitor

Formatting the drive and installing your own OS does not void the warranty.

If the product key on the laptop is a Windows XP Professional Edition key, then you can use that OEM key with a retail version of Windows XP Professional Edition.
