G'day, Just wanted to find out if my system will accept a Geforce 8800 gts 640 mb graphics card and what would be the best way to upgrade the ram to 2 gig? eg; 2 x 1 gig sticks, or 4 x 512 mb stick? might seem like simple questions but when it comes to this computer stuff I'm just a learner, so go easy on me please....:D

There is 4 slots for ram, would I be better to go for 4 gig of memory, I do a bit of graphics in photoshop and would also like to play the latest games, mainly FPS.

and how do I find out if it's 240 pin ram I need or whatever? and I'm guessing after reading around a bit I will need to upgrade my power from 300W to ???? suggestions please?

A good reliable 550w power supply will be good. Brands to look for are FSP (Fortron), Rosewill, Antec, XClio, HIPER....

Well you have 2 x 512mb sticks already installed. Although it would be better as 2 x 1gb, you could just get 2 more sticks of 512mb, to make it 2gb of ram. Or you could try and sell your current ram, and get a 2 x 1gb kit. You don't need 4gb of ram, even with photoshop. 2gb can handle photoshop and gaming.

Also what resolution do you play games at? If you play games at 1440 x 900, 1280 x 1024 or lower....then the 8800GTS 320mb version will do fine, and you'll save money.

Cheers for the links, are those prices Aussie dollars, US or British Pound? seems a lot cheaper than I was expecting? If they're Aussie dollars anyway....

I'll prolly go for the 2 sicks of 1 gb ram and sell the other 2 512 mb sticks. So can you tell me if the 240 pin would be okay? is there any difference or does it not matter?

I use 1440 x 900 resolution, thanks for that info, saves me a few hundred bucks on the graphics card.

Thanks again.

Those prices were US dollars, so thats why I removed the links, and suggested what brand PSUs to look for.

Your current ram is DDR2, and they are 240pin.

hey, why not keep the 2x 512 along with the 2x 1gb? 3gb of ram is better than 2gb, right?

maybe sell the 512 sticks when you can get another 1gb pair. just a thought.

Yeah but I'd prefer the money to help along with the price of the 8800 gts 320mb card, 2 sticks of 1 gb ram and the new power supply....

All up I'm looking at around $800 AUD
