I recently built a computer (first time) in which I put 4 1 GB DDR RAM sticks:

BIOS says there is 4 GB of RAM, but then when I get to Windows, things like dxdiag say I only have 3 GB. I thought that one of the sticks might have been faulty, but then I came across this line in the Motherboard manual:
Due to chipset resource allocation, the system may detect less than 4 GB of system memory when you installed four 1 GB DDR memory modules.

How can I determine whether one of the sticks is faulty or if one of them is not being detected? If one of them is not being detected, does that mean it doesn't get used, or does that mean it only "looks" like I have 3 GB? Why would BIOS and Windows tell me different things?
