Default Quick ? about memory upgrage HP pavilion a1487c

My specs for computer say that I have 4 slots for memory on my mobo (Asus P5LP-LE) and it can handle 4Gb total. On HP website they say that memory is expandable to 4Gb (4x1Gb).
My question is, may I put just two 2Gb sticks (2x2Gb) and remove present 1Gb?
Thank you in advance

Nope. If your slots only support up to 1gb each, you can only put 1gb in each slot.

Most likely not. Based upon what you have said each dimm can only handle a max of 1gb.
Check out RAM Memory Upgrade: Dell, Mac, Apple, HP, Compaq. USB drives, flash cards, SSD at Crucial.com to confirm for your particular model.

that was fast!!! thank you folks!

I'll just give the update what I've found:
that link on crucial.com told me that I can only install 1Gb max in each slot, and Windows XP 32-bit will see only 3.5Gb.
Is it true about 3.5Gb?

Yes 3.5mb is the max it can use and you must also subtract your video card memory from 3.5 to get the actual amount it can use.
