Any TV device you plug into the cable can operate independantly. You could have 100 TVs and watch 100 different channels.

Yes, but the more you split the signal, the weaker the signal becomes, and you will start to see the picture quality degrade. You can use an amplifier to boost the signal. I am not too knowledgeable about coaxail cable properties, but it is on my 'list of junk to read about' when I am bored at work...
