I am starting to think that I need to get a new heat sink and fan....

Well the dimensions of it are 115 x 62.3 x 141mm. So as long as there's 141mm between the top of your CPU socket and your case's side panel, it will fit fine.

141 millimetres = 5.5511811 inches, btw

The only other thing you will need is thermal paste. Get this stuff

It looks like the heatsink comes with an AM2 bracket (which is the same as AM2+ and AM3), so you won't need to buy one.
