Default Presario 900 Processor Upgrade?

Hi there-

I have a Compaq 900 Presario with an Athlon M +1500 chip. The processor is currently my system bottleneck, I would like to know if I can upgrade it on the cheap.

Supposedly it is upgradeable and is in an A-socket.

I'm marginally tech literate, but not too much. Can anyone tell me what, if any, compatible upgrades might be out there and whether or not I can just replace the chip or will need to do other upgrading (BIOS etc) to get it working better?

If it's possible to do a straight swap-out to a better processor, I'd love to do that for under $100.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know of any A Socket intel processors off the top of my head, but if you do a search, say on or just type in A socket in the processor section and see what it gives you.

Socket A is the same thing as a socket 462. Athlon XP processors fell into the Socket 462 catagory. I think they made those up to ~ XP 3000+. I would not hesitate to buy one of those suckers for an upgrade. I also think they made semprons for the budget seeking upgrader. There's room to make that processor about 2x faster than it is. I'd recommend an XP 3000ish

You said something about an M processor, leading me to think you're using a laptop? If so, here's a 2600 M

If you're not looking for something in the M department, here's an XP 2800+

Just my thoughts on the subject...
