In fact, a Pentium 4 1.6GHZ can be edged out by a Pentium 3 1.2GHZ

here is a pre-pentium shot for you Peter... I believe that is EDO ram...
If you look closely, the CPU is smaller than the socket, but it still works... it is a 486 I believe....
LOL. That's nice. If I was older, I'd keep a 486 computer running. The computer I describe was what I got during my "era."

Also, E_D, do you remember the ISA slots? The old days...

and why Core 2's are based on Pentium 3's, not Pentium 4's.

You can see benchmarks from here
Intel's Pentium 4 2GHz processor - The Tech Report - Page 6

Pentium 3 1.2GHz can beat P4 1.6GHz in some cases, but P4 1.6 is overall better performer specially in gaming.

one of the big reasons for that would be the extremely fast memory bandwith of RDRAM compared to SDRAM

Well, it DOES run, Windows 3.1... lol. Also, if you look closely at the lower left corner of that pic, you can see a daughter board (a.k.a. riser card) sticking out of the motherboard.... it has a few ISA slots on it.

Here is another pic for you Peter... a whole case of EDO ram... I KNEW it was somewhere.... just found it, lol.
