Default PCI-E x16 and PCI-E 2.0

Is there a difference between PCI-E x16 and PCI-E 2.0?

Not really, they're backwards compatible with each other. 2.0 is the newer standard.

If you're buying a motherboard though, you're better off getting 2.0, as that would be more future-proof 2.0 provides higher bandwidth to 1.0.

x16 2.0 operates at 5000MHZ versus 2500MHZ for x16 so basically 2.0 provides double the bandwidth.

Current graphics cards cannot fully saturate the 1.0 bandwidth, so it is sort of pointless. The 2.0 standard is there for when the cards can actually do it. Think of it as "future-proofing".
