Default Nvidia 8600gt

I'm trying to finalise a new computer.

The specs are vague becuase i'm not too sure of the acutal details yet

core 2duo e420
2 gb DDR2 667 Ram
Intel 965X PCI Express Motherboard

I have my eye on the 8600gt.

like : Leadtek GeForce 8600GT 256MB PCI-E : lea-86gt

The kind of games i want to play are company of heroes, medieval total war 2 , half life 2 , lord of the rings online.

I want to have pretty decent graphics but i'm not a graphics junkie. My monitor's native resolutionis 1200x1024. Will the 8600gt give me playable framerates at higher settings?

If you don't have your eye on DirectX 10 games, I would recommend buying a Dx9 card which performs better for your money on Dx9 games, like a 7900gs, or something around that pricerange.

Newegg also have 7900GS for $120 (which is better than X1950GT)

Newegg.com - EVGA 256-P2-N624-AR GeForce 7900GS 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 KO Video Card - Retail

Or 7950GT for $149 after rebate
Newegg.com - BFG Tech BFGR7950256GTOCE GeForce 7950GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 OC HDCP Video Card - Retail

thanks for the replies and suggestions.

Am i right in thinking the new "games for windows" label from windows will require the game designers to make the game dx10 compatible. Will this mean you can only play them with a dx10 or will they be compatible with dx9 for a few years?

I think DX10 games can be played in DX9, just not with the DX10 graphical features. I could be wrong.

If you were determined to get an 8600, Id suggest the gts. Much better for a little more money.
