i was talking to my friend about stuff like this...he says AMD is not worth it...cheaper but not as good...and that i should use intel instead. is this true?

your friend is wrong.
you have nothing to worry about by going with amd. just because it costs less to go that route doesn't mean that you'll get cheaper parts, they just offer better price/performance parts in the lower price point.

If you can manage to unlock and overclock your Phenom II X2 555, you can shove the performance in his face.
Unlocked and overclocked it'll stomp all over any of Intel's old Core 2 Duos, most of the Core 2 Quads, and perform closely with the lower end Core i* CPUs.
