new memory?

so to make a LONG story short, my daughter ended up with my son's old gaming computer. but, one of the memory sticks went bad. its ddr3 memory, but without opening it up and removing the one good stick, i really do not know exactly what is in it. so i have a question. i am thinking about buying a pair of of these https://www.newegg.com/corsair-16gb-240-pin-ddr3-sdram/p/N82E16820233365 because i THINK that is whats in it now. it has a asus z97a motherboard, which is dual channel. so if i install the new ones in the primary channel, and whats in it now, will it work if they are not exactly the same (speed, etc.)? i read someplace that the modules should actually be even made from the same batch, which is not going to happen now since the original system was built years ago.

Why not pop open the side of the case, pull out a memory stick and see what's printed on the memory stick sticker?

Your best option would be to go to the Asus web site for that particular board to see what and how much that board can support:

It has 4 memory slots and you ought to refer to the manual as to which slots are the proper dual channel slots for this board (using two memory sticks)
Also a better option to use a matched set of memory, often not necessary but you would have less compatibility issues later
BTW: your memory does look like it is on the QVL list from Asus.

That should be a safe bet, XWrench. I would remove both RAM modules already in the rig and replace them with the Corsair RAM. You can test the old RAM and figure out which stick is bad and them RMA them as most RAM have limited lifetime warranties. If they do RMA them then you can add in the RAM you get back into the rig or repurpose them elsewhere.
