new here - Building a computer

Hi there, just registered, name's newton.

Everything I know about computers comes from fixing and upgrading my own. I'm not a computer whiz and I don't know too much, but enough, I think, to assemble my first computer.

I want a computer that's pretty fast (So I can play some new games in decent detail with good FPS) and also cheap (Trying to keep it under around $600). Most importantly, I want it to be very reliable, as I store a lot of files on my computer (my previous one crashed a lot ).

What do you guys think of the setup? Alright? If some of you would, recommend to me a setup under $600 that would suit my needs. It would also be a big bonus to get them all at newegg (good experience with those guys). Thanks a lot!

That's $580 right there w/o shipping. Not too bad as far as price goes. If you would look at it a bit and tell if the setup is fine, I'd appreciate it a lot. Thanks!

XFX is bad. Their failure rate is rather high, so it would probably be a good idea to switch to a manufacturer with a better rep, like eVGA.

Also, is there any particular reason you are going with Socket 754? It's dying, and quickly.

The PSU isn't so great. Fortron (I hope I spelled that right) and Antec have some good PSUs, so that would be something to look into.

I would definitely switch over to a socket 939 due to the fact that socket 754s will die out in usage and the 939 will have be better in years to come. Especially since i read somewhere that amd will be launching yet another socket sometime in 06 which will also decrease the usage of 754s.

939 is newer, supports dual core, dual channel RAM, and PCI-E, to a larger extent, than 754 does.

Alright, but I don't know much about mobos. The 754 was the one my friend picked out. What would I want to look for in a mobo? Any particular 939 mobo you would recommend? And I also have to change over the a 939 CPU right?

DFI Lanparty Ultra-D, because you won't be going SLi anyways, would you?

As for the case, isn't it a little boring? Check your local stores, you can actually SEE the cases before purchasing them, the price difference isn't a lot.

The board I suggested is PCI-E compatiable, I would suggest an eVGA 6600GT or 6800GT, I'm pretty sure both of them are under 180 dollars. As for the processor, I would go with any dual-core proccesor that you have enough money for, probably an Opteron proccesor.

Yeah, I'll probably go around looking at more cases, but I often prefer the clean look. Not a big fan of neons and LEDs.

Anyways, The Ultra-D mobo you suggested Rocky, would put me a bit outta my budget there and with a new processor.

I'm not looking for a high-po machine that will last a long time. It would be nice to play games in the new 2006, but I'm happy with a PC that can play current games smoothly and well.

Any other downsides to the 754 besides the fact its a bit outdated?
