so, my personal computer failed. Im looking to upgrade. Im thinking a quad core (q6600 or q6700 with new pricing?) tower, and i have a monitor and peripherals, and ill need windows (vista?). im thinking up to $800 for a budget. itll be used for all sorts of things, but gaming mostly. would it be possible to use the old case, and just get a new power supply?

thank you in advance...

if you're looking to cut costs you could cut the gts to a 9600gt or an 8800gt which are pretty cheap at the moment.

he needs a monitor to be included in that $800, from what i can tell in his first post...
and what the heck does he need a quad-core for? seems excessive... id scale back to these if i were him:

Intel Core 2 Duo E4600 Allendale 2.4GHz 2MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Dual-Core Processor
$126.99

and instead of the 8800GTS, maybe a 9600GT:

EVGA GeForce 9600GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 Video Card
$149.99

and then add a monitor... hmm... mebbe:

Acer AL1916WAbd Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor
$179.99

just some thoughts to save a few bucks, and for more intelligent performance... the rest looks pretty legit tho... good luck with your build :) - RK

or even get an e2200 and cut costs even more. and yeah get a 9600gt to cut costs from the 8800gts, and throw the extra money into a nice monitor. although it did say he didn't need a monitor, but he had a monitor in the build.

so thats something that needs to be addressed :D

rightright... he says here that he has one:

... and i have a monitor and peripherals, and ill need windows (vista?).

but then he lists this one in his build:

ViewSonic Value Series VA702b Black 17" 8ms LCD Monitor - Retail
$219.99

odd... i think we need to get him in here to clear this up... that $200~ that would be going towards a monitor can make a pretty sizable difference in other places, so... it would help us to help YOU if you are more specific... lol :) - RK

i dont NEED a monitor, but the one listed that i have could be nicer.... so i guess id rather have a better tower for now and upgrade later.

id like to keep it under $800 to keep the wife happy, maybe a little more... ;) and as far as the quad core, i figured that'd future proof for a while. i cant reuse the harddrive, as that is one of the components that failed a little bit with some bad sectors, so ill just use it as a backup. plus its ata100. the only component that i think i can reuse is the case, and im definitely going to need a new psu with it.

thanks

how about this? is there anything wrong with it/ missing?

Newegg.com - Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 ST3250410AS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - Internal Hard Drives
check out the 7200.11 series mebbe?

dont bother with getting a factory superclocked model... the difference is negligible for the price, and you can manually overclock it just as well... it really is rather easy... and believe me, this is a mistake i learned first hand :D haha

Newegg.com - Rosewill RP550-2 ATX12V v2.01 550W Power Supply 115/230 V CSA,UL,TUV, FCC - Power Supplies
i havent heard many good things about Rosewill PSU's... id go with a Corsair 520 or a Silverstone one mebbe...

Newegg.com - G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory
good RAM... its either that, or Crucial Ballistix, depends on the price you can get each for is all...

Newegg.com - Microsoft Windows Vista 32-Bit Home Premium for System Builders Single Pack DVD - Operating Systems
i dont like vista, but... i saw this was on sale for like... super cheap, so go for it haha

Newegg.com - ABIT IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard - Intel Motherboards
pretty good board...

Newegg.com - Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz 2 x 4MB L2 Cache LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor - CPUs / Processors
Q6700 mebbe? not that big a price difference... dunno...

Newegg.com - Scythe SCMNJ-1000 80mm Sleeve "NINJA MINI" CPU Cooler - CPU Fans & Heatsinks
with arctic silver 5
id choose a different HSF if i were you... check out this list of the best/most efficient ones, then pick one you like...
that, and go for Arctic Cooling MX-2 instead, prolly...

after combo deals it comes to a Grand Total of: $872.91 , then minus $60 in MIR, shipping $22.36 final $835.27

thanks all

bolded my suggestions... just a few thoughts :) - RK
