Need to build rock-solid stable PC

The subject pretty much says it. I have built two computers in the past (they are rather outdated now) and as I am moving on to a full time job out of college, I would like to build another system. My main requirement is stability. My existing computer has problems running programs such as Firefox, Itunes and a number of other programs for reasons I cannot figure out. My new job requires me to install a mix of programs and I would of course like to have programs such as firefox and itunes run well.

Basically I am looking for input on any components / combinations of components / full computer build you have had experience with and has remained stable for a long period of time. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot everyone!

what is your budget and I take gaming is not a concern? will the programs be graphic intense? and will this be in the work place? or home for work use?

Yes this will be a computer used at home for work. I would like to remain under $1000 for budget. Gaming is of no concern, in fact I could likely get away with integrated graphics as the programs they plan to have me run (accounting software mainly) are not graphically intensive.

A good motherboard, CPU, RAM, Graphics Card, HD and PSU are specifically what i'm looking for. I can find optical drives to use and already have an ATX case everything can be put into. I'm not partial to AMD or Intel either for this build, either will do just fine.

Since gaming isn't for you... the 7600GT is a good choice for just about anything... even solitare!

the CPU and RAM are good for the multitasking your probably going to do... the PSU might be a tad overkill, but it gives you room to upgrade later on if you want.

Go with unbuffered ECC Ram (Error correcting) - it can make your system much more stable.

I would also go with a PCP&P, Seasonic, Corsair, Zippy, or Etasis PSU instead.

If he is just going to be using more basic programs ( graphically) does he really need a card that good? I know it is not like a "good " gaming card or anything but couldent he save about $100 and get this card?
