need advice for external hd for dvr plz, thx

I have a dish network dvr and I don't want to lose anything I've recorded, so they said I could copy all of the stuff I have on to it. I was looking for the top of line external hd I could afford, seeing how best buy might lead me astray. I need something with usb 2.0, Only 1 physical disc, and fast as f...k, lol. and it own power supply

Who told you that you could copy the content to another hard drive? I've never heard of a satellite company allowing that with their DVRs.
