Default Motherboards an RAM

When I go to buy my Motherboard and RAM, how do I know the speed I need? I'm starting from scratch, and I don't know what speed(i think that's correct term) RAM to use.

your mobo will say what ram it will support. PC3200 then you need PC3200 ram

AMD only supports DDR up to PC3200.

intel supports DDR2 and DDR which goes up to like PC25800 or something like that
