Default Motherboards

First of all, yes I am a computer 'noob' but that's besides the point.

I would like to know what the motherboard does, and what I mean by that is does it effect my hard drive or anything on it?
Also, what else does it do. Because in reading on buying a new video card that I want, I read that it might fry my motherboard, which is likely. (I purchased my PC in 2001, and everything on it is from then. So yes, very old)

So anyways, I suppose if any of that made sense, help would be greatly appreciated.

OH, and also I forgot maybe the most important thing, given all that information, would the motherboard be at all neccessary?

Heres the video card BTW:
