I have a very basic question (having never assembled a computer before)

Does a monitor require a video card? (built in or separate). From what read it does, although from somewhere I also read that the monitor output was actually setup in memory.

If that is the case, then when setting up a new op system I should make absolutely sure the op system has the driver for the video card installed, or I get no monitor output?

Thanks.

You need a display device in order to have video. You must use integrated graphics (in some motherboards) otherwise you'll need a video card.

The video card will work without any official drivers but it will not work to its full potential.
