memory upgrade problem

I have an older dell with only 512 RAM. I bought a stick of 1 gig for it. The computer reconized the RAm and booted when I restarted except the video and everything was messed up. Like in safe mode when the drivers don't load. Does that mean that the RAM isn't compatible with my system?

When you bought that 1GB of RAM, did you check to see if it was the same speed as the 512MB?

try the one gig by itself and see if it works.

when you say speed do you mean the same kind (e.g. PC2700 ect.). That is the same. I only didn try the DIMM by itself. I put back the other two and it works fine.

Oh, so you were running both the 1GB and the 512MB together?

no. I just put in the 1gb by itself. The other ram was 2 dimms of 256. So I know both slots are good.
