i would like to buy my son a M.2 hard drive for his gaming rig, i know (because it says right on the board (ASUS Z97-A)) that it will accept one, but i do not find a connector that looks anything like what an M.2 card looks like. does it go into one of the pci ex sockets?

Blue circle, according to the model # you gave:

i will look again when he is not gaming (might be tuesday when he goes back to school), while the ink is there, i do not think the connector is.

If that's the board he has then it's there. Not to be nit picky but it's M.2 SSD, as there are no HDDs that use the connector.

Take note that the M.2 slot on that board will only accept older type M.2 PCI-E SSDs (like my old HyperX Predator 2.0 4x) or a SATA M.2 SSD.

Few options include:

https://www.amazon.com/500GB-Intern...pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1495912200&sr=1-4&keywords=m.2

https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Hyp...pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1495912200&sr=1-8&keywords=m.2

Another thing to note, if your son already has a standard 2.5" SATA SSD the top two won't show any difference.

yes, i goofed, he wants a SSD. although he wants a larger HDD as well. he has his 1TB over 80% filled already. how much faster for gaming will an M.2 SSD be than a standard 2.5"? it may be less expensive to get him a larger HDD and a 2.5" SSD. i may have to buy one for his birthday, and one for Christmas. of course, in 2 days, he will want something else as well. he is like a Dyson vacuum cleaner after my wallet!

i am not trying to be difficult, but there are 2 of the 3 connectors or keys and one of the two connector (the hyper x) types in the links above. so i am still confused.

The board will take an M key. The only difference being M does 2x lanes and B does 4x lanes. Most are either an M key or M+B for compatibility. The B key is always on the left side of the stick so M+B drives will fit in M only sockets.

But, I have to correct myself on my previous post. Your board does NOT support SATA M.2. It is limited to PCI-E only like the Predator I linked.
