IDE Drive Problem

I'm having trouble hooking up an IDE hard drive, because the end of the ribbon is already plugged into my cd drive and the slave connector is too close to the end to reach down to my drive bays. I'm not sure if this setup would even work if I got an appropriate cable, however, because it doesn't seem like a problem anyone has had in the past. This was my first comp. build so I was a little puzzled that I was plugging the IDE ribbon into a CD drive; is this really the correct way to do it? I think I might have been able to get away with doing it like this because I have been using a SATA hard drive that doesn't need an IDE plug.

How do I plug in both an IDE drive and a CD drive?

one drive will need to be designated as a master and the other as a slave, this is done by adjusting the "jumpers" at the back. there should be a diagram giving an indication of where to position the jumper for master or slave. you could however set both drives to cable select (CS).
