Asus and Abit are good quality products. I have personnaly owned 2 asus/intel boards and so has my family and we've never had any problems with them. Asus also makes a great amd compatible board in the a8n series.

It is recommended to reformat and reinstall the OS after changing mobo's, but you could always try it without and see how it works. I would just reformat, but its up to you.

BTW, I am guessing you already bought DDR RAM as well? If so, you will either have to go with an old mobo, or change the RAM to DDR2 as well.

usually if you have the same chipsets, you'll be okay and won't have to reformat. in some instances, you could get away with just a repair install

Yes, I have pc3200 ddr ram already and that's what the board supports that I got. It may not be ddr2 but it will still be fast.
