Default I have a problem with HDD type and my notebook

I bought an external hard disk case(box) which is connected to computer by USB cable. Now i want to buy a hard disk for that case (box). My external hard disk case (box) supports both IDE and SATA disks. If i buy a SATA disk, can i use this with my computer? I do not know whether my notebook computer supports SATA disks or not. I do not have any idea about SATA technology. By using this external SATA disk box, can i connect a SATA disk to a mother (main) board which does not support SATA technology? Data transfer between computer and SATA disk is provided by only USB 2.0 cable.
