How do i update my bios if i already have the file?

ok so i just got the file to update my bios from my motherboard's website but wen i click open it just says "windows cannot open this file, file: 040715s.ROM. it says that it doesn't know what program to use to open it. It says it doesn't recognize the file type. so any ideas on what to do?

When you double click on the BIOS file, it'll create a folder with the file name. Atleast with Abit BIOS it will. Then you have to make a bootable disk and load the files onto that floppy. Then you restart your comp and go into the BIOS and tell it to boot from floppy first. Then you restart again, and you install the BIOS.

Its not as easy as just running the file and you're done. Check your motherboard/BIOS manufacturer page for exact details for updating the BIOS.
