You shouldent even turn it on without the heatsink properly installed.

^^^ Yes, when I built an AMD 2200+ XP system a couple years ago (my first AMD build) I got a Thermal Take CPU Heatsink & fan combo.... overlooked the thermal paste, and wound up with a CPU core FUSED to the bottom of the heatsink.... that really sucked, cause I didn't have another $300 for a new CPU at the time.. LOL...... so YEAH, don't start it up without the heatsink & fan on the CPU.

Yes you could have fryed the CPU.
How long did you have it powered up ?
