I just bought a Seagate SATA 500GB ST3500630AS to replace my old Seagate IDE 100GB but after transferring and partitioning my the drives I went ahead and checked my temps. My HD had hit an observed high of 55c and I'm pretty sure it was higher during the install because I had both drives in next to each other running at full speed and Speccy and Speed Fan can't observe while outside of the OS so they can't tell me anything. What I want to know is "Is it ok to have 47-55c operating temps on a hard drive?"

Your OS drive will always be your hottest. It has to shift many files each day.

A hdd at mid-40C is fine. If it gets a little hot, put a fan perpendicular to it. It will cool your drives. Several cases have this option at the front of the case.

Well my issue was I was running low 50s but at the time i had no window on my case it was just a hole. I put acrylic in and the case temps dropped all around I'm running low to mid 40s now.
Proof that pressurized cases with actual front to back airflow cool better than an open end case.
