Default Hard Drive recovery

I recently had a hard drive go bad on a laptop and took it into a store and had them try to recover things from it and put it on an external hard drive, a My Passport 1tb Western Digital. well, that worked well enough and I have the files I need but also there is a HUGE file called "image.dd".

What is that? It is 298GB in size! I would like to now erase everything from my external drive and use it for backup and storage, but I dont know what that .dd file is or if I can safely delete it.

Can anybody tell me what to do with this file?
