Default Hard Drive Questions

Hi,

I was going to buy a Raptor but first I need to upgrade my mother board and then all my other parts first, so I won't be getting that Raptor anytime soon. Right now I have a Western Digital, 160 Gb, 7200 rpm (I think), that came with my Dell.

I just wanted to know if a hard drive could just die? Like, all of a sudden it crashes and all the data is lost. Since this HD is like 3 years old I am scared it might die of old age. Is that possible? Another thing I was worried about is that I format my hard drives alot, could that ruin them?

One last thing. I was looking around on my computer and I saw this thing I believe it was on the Windows disk which alows me to transfer files from one hard drive to another. Will this only transfer my files, or will it transfer my windows installation and all of my settings as well (such as hidden folders, resolution and display settings, etc.)

Thanks,
Ted

yes a hard drive could just die... files could get corrupt, it could get dropped and be internally damaged, etc...

What you see if the Files and transfer wizard... It will xfer your files and what not... it'll even xfer most of windows OS files... but I did say MOST... It's windows way of not making copies of their OS. there are certain files that it won't touch if you want to make a copy of your hard drive, then I would suggest Norton Ghost, or hard drive clone, something of that nature...

I see thanks, but also does formating a hard drive ruin the hard drive?
