Buy a Toshiba with a core 2 processor 2.4ghz at least 1gb of RAM
100GB Hard Disk
Windows XP
Decent sound and graphics
About: £1000

What are you going to be doing on it? Internet, typing, gaming, etc.

Here are some guidelines of what you should look for:
Centrino/Turion processor
1gb ram
80-120gb hard drive (depending on how much music you've got)
A dvd burner and wireless will be built into all of these laptops, should get 3-4 hours of battery life if you've got a standard 15.4" screen.

Good brands: HP, Compaq, Toshiba, Sony (spendy though)
Brands to stay away from: Dell and Acer are temptingly cheap but both have pretty poor reliability (fixem all the time).
Gateway can be good (I've got one) but I'd only get it if it had a pretty good price on it.
