Default Friend want s to upgrade

Hey how is it going.
So my friend wants to his upgrade his rig. He already bought a new-ish GPU ( radeon HD 6750 ). His rig is a dual core E5700, a Gigabyte G41 board which I can't remember its name off the top of my head and a couple of 1 GB DDR2 sticks.
He was gonna buy new DDR2 rams ( 4 GB ) and a used dual core CPU ( E7xxx or so ).
His CPU usage is always at 100% while he's gaming so he's heavily bottlenecked by his CPU I suppose.
I suggested that he goes for a Pentium G620/G645 with the cheapest H61 board he can find and a 4 GB DDR3 1333 MHz or so.
Will he see a performance upgrade by that?

Would have seen more of a performance upgrade getting a much better GPU.

100% CPU usage doesn't always mean CPU bottleneck. I think the move to a DDR3 system is smart to get some cheap RAM.

Depending on budget and upgrade path and budget he has a few options.

He can get 8GB of DDR3 1600 now to get that out of the way, a used 775 CPU (you can find quads cheap too) and this motherboard:
Newegg.com - ASRock G41C-GS LGA 775 Intel G41 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

The other option is:
Newegg.com - Intel Pentium G2020 Ivy Bridge 2.9GHz LGA 1155 55W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics BX80637G2020
ASRock H61M-DGS Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Newegg.com

IMO if he is going to spend any money at all on an upgrade he might as well take it to IB level and DDR3. Unless he can find some stupid good deals on 775 parts then there really is no point wasting almost the same amount of cash on the age old socket.

Yea I figured, DDR2 is pretty pricy here. The cost of 2GB DDR2 800 MHz single stick is same as 4 GB DDR3 1333 MHz single stick.
He won't be changing motherboards because then it'll be killing the point in upgrading the CPU, if he's changing the CPU he can just change the whole platform all together. Then he can sell the old stuff for a decent price.
Which is better, G645 or G2020?

I see. Much difference? I guess it'd not fit in his budget, we may have to go down to G620 to make it fit.
Would that be a good upgrade from his E5700?

Not as much as say, an i3 or better GPU.

So if he's seeing a bottleneck with his current setup, will an LGA 1155 Pentium dual core be god enough to eliminate the bottleneck?

Yes, but the thing is I doubt he's having a bottleneck on that CPU with a 6750. I would say having a low amount of RAM and too many background tasks would be the basis of his current problem. He will see better frames and background task management from a faster CPU yes, but it wont be like night and day difference.

He's playing on 1366x768 resolution, something around 19'' IIRC.
I think tho, that a newer platform should be better if he'd like to upgrade more down the road. Maybe LGA 1155 is a dead socket but it'll provide him with more choices in the long run.
He's running his rig with a 350W PSU, will it be enough for the upgrade?

Yea it'll be fine.

1155 is dead but he can always upgrade to a 3570k. That will last a long time.
