At the moment i have the standard fan on the back of the case i got when i first bought the computer. It's a fairly standard case you'd expect to get with a fairly standard computer.

My question is, if i was to replace the fan that came with the case, would i get a noticeable noise reduction?

In the case i have that fan, my CPU fan and a small fan on my Geforce 7600gs. The main case fan seems to be the loudest.

if you can hear you current one, then upgrading to a < 20 db one you would notice an improvement

Well at the moment it's the fan and the power supply fan making the most noise.

Do you mean just a simple fan such as this one:
Nexus 8cm Silent Internal Case Fan 17.6dB : nex-s8cmfa

if the size is correct (eg 8cm) will it fit into any case that already has that sized fan or is there another factor which affects what case a fan can fit in?

w00t novatech!! i live near them , its not the best idea in the world to do anything to the PSU however that case fan is fine if the mount on your case is 8cm

I live relatively near them too, more Southampton direction though.

If there is any particular fan that is better than any others it would be interesting to know. The vertical height of the fan in my case is 8cm.
